Dogs tends to gulp their food rather than chew it, so much can passed through their system undigested.
	Bitches often eat the faecal matter of their young as part of an evolutionary response so that predators are not drawn to the den by the odour from faeces.

 

We therefore looked at a logical approach to the problem – if the faeces tastes and smells unsavoury, then the habit of eating faecal matter can soon be broken. So the task is to have a product that is palatable when added to their regular food, yet would deter the dog from eating it again after it had passed through the digestive tract.

A few ingredients are known to be effective in this respect:

Bromelain extracted from pineapples

Garlic extract – due to its odour

Capsicum Oleoresin – which has a very hot taste.

These ingredients are mixed with more palatable ingredients like Brewers Yeast for example.

How to use Deterrent:

Please avoid the temptation to sniff the ingredients when you open the pot!

Capsicum Oleoresin is a pepper and may make you sneeze. Similarly the product must not be put onto the pet’s food dry.

With wet food diet this is very easy:

You simply mix the desired dose into the wet food.  With dry food, you need to separate the food into two portions and soak half in a small amount of warm water.

The powder is then mixed thoroughly into the damp portion and the two parts (dry and damp) are then mixed together.

 

How much to use:

A little trial and error will be needed to obtain the desired dose. Also remember that when the dog attempts to eat the faeces that has passed containing Deterrent, it will be rather peppery and hence ensure that you pet has plenty of fresh water available!

Inside the pot you will find a small scoop. Start with a very small amount of the product in each dog’s meal every meal time.

Slowly increase this each day, so that the dogs get used to the odour and flavour.

The larger the dog the more may be needed to break the habit, but in all cases do not exceed one scoop per day.

Once the faecal eating habit is broken, reduce down to a much lower maintenance dose. 

In the case of any adverse reaction, stop using the product immediately.
